Current Position

IT Specialist/Technical Author, Aberdeen - January 2000 to Present

Development:

Development work includes a web-based system detailing the company's drillstring failure autopsies. System is based on active server pages (asp & asp.NET), VBScript, ADO, JavaScript and Access/MS SQL Server and is a fully searchable, secure system. Also developed is a Visual Basic/Access based database system for the inspection requirements of new drilling string equipment. I was the sole developer on this project from initial conceptualization through to deployment with several major oil companies. This package was designed to comply with Microsoft Windows 2000 Certification and Shell GID and was deployed using Microsoft Windows Installer.

IT Support:

Currently responsible for the IT support for the company's network, consisting of an NT server and 20 client workstations. Position involves day-to-day network setup & maintenance and support of desktop applications, including MS Office and specialist oilfield packages. Also in charge of the update and maintenance of the company's website, including setup, maintenance and security issues of the company’s co-located web server, and advising the directors of IT developments and managing the company's IT budget.

Documentation:

Documentation work including writing, review and update of the company's training and inspection manuals and creation of illustrations for these.

Software used includes Pagemaker, InDesign, Freehand, Photoshop, Director, Designer, MS Frontpage, MS Office, Visio.

Previous Positions

Technical Author/Web Developer, Aberdeen - April 1994 to January 2000

Responsible for the documentation of a wide range of well intervention tools and completion equipment. The position involved the writing and updated of product data sheets for the company's product catalogue (paper-based and CDROM) & Intranet, technical documentation for the installation, maintenance and retrieval of the company's products and creation of illustrations of the above.

Responsible for the creation, maintenance and update of the Company's Internet web site using VBScript, asp and SQL database.

Software used includes Pagemaker, Freehand, Photoshop, Director, Designer, MS Frontpage, AutoCAD R14 & MS Word.

The position also entailed the general supervision of three Technical Illustrators.

Technical Writer, Aberdeen - June 1991 to April 1994

I was responsible for writing and updating installation, maintenance and operation manuals for a wide range of oil field equipment, including surface and subsea wellheads and completions, mudline suspension systems and subsea wellhead tieback systems. The manuals are produced using a Wordperfect/Ventura based system.

I also created illustrations and drawings for the manuals using AutoCAD R11 & R12, Micrografx Designer and Adobe Illustrator.

Technical Author, Aberdeen - September 1990 - June 1991

Responsible for writing new and updating existing documentation on subsea production equipment for use in sales proposals. The documents were produced using a Wordperfect/Ventura based DTP system. The work included the defining and setting up of new formats for sales proposals, defining of procedure for creation of new proposals and training of staff in the use of the DTP system.

Technical Author, The Netherlands - August 1988 to September 1990

Involved in producing user and system documentation, including online help for a new publishing system installed at Philips Components. It is a WordPerfect / SGML / Ventura-based system running on a DEC VAX under VMS and networked IBM PCs running Ventura.

Technical Author, Cheltenham - September 1987 - August 1998

I was involved in the documentation of a variety of commercial, military and government projects, including ATE for the Tornado MRCA, various RF and digital communication equipment handbooks for the UK Government and servicing manuals for various items of equipment for the UK Navy.
